The U.S. is considering a trade deal with Canada, and if it doesn’t make it, the Trump administration may not be able to keep it from Congress, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
Trump administration officials are mulling the possibility of renegotiating a bilateral trade agreement that would have the potential to lead to an eventual bilateral trade deal between the United States and Canada.
“There are many elements that are going to need to be worked out,” a senior administration official said of the negotiations.
It is unclear how much the United Sates will pay Canada in order to reach a deal.
If a deal doesn’t get done, the UnitedS.
could be left with a massive trade deficit with Canada.
The United States would also have to spend billions to re-examine Canada’s free trade agreement and potentially re-impose tariffs.
The potential deal is a major economic blow for the U.A.E., which is already suffering from the economic downturn and the recession that began under former President Donald Trump.
Canada has said it won’t be negotiating with the UnitedStates over a trade deficit.
