Mozambican President Jonathan Addai-Addo says he’s open to a bilateral trade deal with China, but he’s not in favor of a bilateral economic trade embargo.
The country is struggling to recover from a recession that began in 2014 and ended in 2016 with the collapse of the diamond and gold industries.
The diamond industry in Mozambia is a key part of the economy.
The country’s diamond mining industry was valued at $1.6 billion in 2017.
Mozambique is also dependent on diamond imports to keep its economy afloat, making it the second largest diamond producer in the world.
The country’s GDP grew by 7.9 percent in 2016.
Chinese imports account for 40 percent of Mozambian exports.
